Hurricane Lala began its path toward Hawaii’s Big Island on Saturday, though the possibility of a direct hit, which would be the first in 155 years, was uncertain.

Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday and is already lashing parts of Hawaii with strong winds and heavy rain as the storm approaches a potentially historic landfall.

If it makes landfall as a hurricane, Lala would be the first on record to hit the Big Island and the first hurricane to make landfall in Hawaii in more than three decades.
