Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday and is already lashing parts of Hawaii with strong winds and heavy rain as the storm approaches a potentially historic landfall.

Hurricane Lala took aim at Hawaii’s Big Island on Saturday on a forecast track for possible landfall, which would be the island’s first direct hit from a hurricane in 155 years.

According to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, with its eye located 30 miles southwest of South Point as of 11am HST.
